Future Earth Finland – National Committee for Global Change Research promotes interdisciplinary global change research, which has an impact on society. The national committee represents Finland in the international global change initiatives and programs. The chair of the national committee is Professor Markku Kulmala from the University of Helsinki. The Steering Group consists of high-level scientists across the different disciplines and the end-users of science from the most central stakeholder groups.
The national committee implements the objectives of Future Earth, the new global change research program coordinated by the International Council for Science, ICSU. Future Earth builds and shares knowledge for sustainable development. The initiative studies the global change from an integrated perspective and aims for greater societal impact by involving the various stakeholders related to sustainable development in the design and dissemination of research.
Future Earth Finland aims to build and share knowledge on global change in a way that the research results contribute to the scientific community and to the society. The national committee facilitates the interdisciplinary dialogue and engages scientists of all disciplines, natural and social, as well as engineering, the humanities and law.
The national committee aims to ensure that the research and scientific knowledge on global change is useful and accessible for the end-users. It designs its projects in a close partnership with the society and relevant stakeholders. The national committee also enhances the networking of the global change related scientific advisory boards in Finland.
To share best practices and to gain international perspective, the national committee collaborates with fellow national committees abroad and their regional clusters such as the European Alliance of Global Change Research Committees.
The national committee has a 10-person steering group with members from natural and social sciences, ministries and municipalities, industry, and economic stakeholders. The two-person secretariat of the committee is located at the University of Helsinki.
